The author divides this book into three different parts. In the first part, he communicates to the reader how students with high leveled education and others get together to challenge the high-powered Anglos and Mexican American. In the second part, he examines how the Chicano movement flourished and how women and ex-gang members attempted to join the political world. In the final part, Montejano decided to include his point of view on how the political leaders that failed could’ve made a difference in the political world. This book was full of surprises, the way Montejano quotes actual people is just beautiful.
Always Running, written by Luis Rodriguez, begins in Mexico, with seven-year-old Luis and his family in their car headed for their new life in America. Luis has two sisters and one brother. His father used to be the school principal, a position of great power in a small town. The local parents had forcefully removed him from his position. The family was forced to leave their home and their lives for the safety of the United States.
For this book review, I am going to be talking about David Montejano’s book entitled Quixote’s Soldiers, A local history of the Chicano Movement, 1966-1981. The author’s purpose is very well explained and it is not hard to understand. The author clearly tries to explain different ideologies, individuals and organizations located in one of the Southwest’s major cities, San Antonio, Texas, during the late 1960s and early 190s. Challenged Book: Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days In L.A. In the book, Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days In L.A, written by Luis J. Rodriguez, the main character Luis Rodriguez, experiences a crazy early teen life of being a gang member in East Los Angeles. Luis Rodriguez describes La Vida Loca, which means “the crazy life”, through the gang culture, the endless shootings he witnessed, beatings, arrests, and also through murder, drugs, and suicide.
In 1967, Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales published his poem, “Yo Soy Joaquin” and it had a profound impact on Chicano social identity. The poem is considered to be the “epic of the Mexican-American people (Blackwell, 110). On March 23, 1969, the Chicano Youth Liberation Conference was assembled. A generation of Mexican-American youth came together on a large scale to discuss and act on issues plaguing the Mexican-American community: discrimination and oppression. The Mexican-American’s history of struggle and sentiment for change peaked during the Civil Rights Movement, which formulated the Chicano social identity.
Hunger of Memory is a memoir of the educational experience of Richard Rodriguez and his journey as a first generation Mexican- American citizen. The book is compiled of a prologue, in which he states his reasons for writing, and six chapters with no specific chronological order. Richard Rodriguez grew up in a white, middle-class neighborhood and attended a Catholic school. He describes his early childhood as a war between his “public” and “private life”: a war between school and home. He struggled when he first started school, because English was his second language and he felt insecure about his shaky ability to communicate through it.

Always running has a heap of different themes. But the theme that is the most seen in the story is racial identity. Racial identity affects Luis the main character because he is an immigrant from Mexico that jumped the border to try and get away from the mexican rule and unsafety. When he comes to the new town in Las Angeles, he is the new kid on the block so he gets treated badly because of his background. When he arrives into the new area he and his family does not do very well when they first get there because people think that they are incapable of doing any of the things in america.
The Chicano Movement of the 1960s brought to the forefront of Mexican-American consciousness the need to identify as a self-determined group with unique histories, legends, heroes, triumphs, and legacies (Garcia). This belief in the importance of a renegotiation of Chicano subjectivity and the retrieval of a lost history is embedded in the text of Arturo Islas’ novel The Rain God. Miguel Chico puts forth in this story about a family of sinners—the Angel family—that literature can be utilized as a source of recovery through the acknowledgment of systems of oppression. The traditional definition of Chicano social identity throughout the civil rights era is still valuable today but to a certain extent. The consciousness and commitment to activism are the two parts of the definition that still hold meaning. Cultural pride as stated as part of the definition, is limited only to those who are of Mexican decent, educated, those that are of middle class and the politically involved. It excludes those who are undocumented, are biracial, Central Americans, Chicana lesbians and Chinese immigrants. Therefore, the definition of Chicano social identity should be redefined, but not all completely.
I was already extremely eager and curious about what the next portion of the ethnic studies course was. As I finished writing in my notebook, I gazed up at the whiteboard at the exact moment that my teacher wrote the last letter on the board, “t”, in “The Chicano Movement.” Afterwards, class promptly commenced when we began watching a PBS documentary called “The Chicano Movement” as an introduction to the Chicano Movimiento. Throughout the documentary, my twelve-year old self finally saw my racial identity being represented in a history class for the first time in my school career. The documentary depicted the harsh endeavors of achieving social justice for the Chicanx community of the Brown Berets and other Chicanxs active in the movement.
To many people “I am Joaquin” is more than just an epic poem, it is the anthem of the Chicano movement which embodies our peoples struggles and culture. What made the work become the Chicano Movements anthem is the fact that it is a piece that seems to evaluate the Chicanos and their history from the good to the bad. It also seems to emphasize the Chicanos search and struggle for identity starting from the beginning of the Spanish conquest to our modern times. Basically this poem has become such an iconic work because it attempts and succeeds in encompassing as much Chicano history into it and makes no bias choice as it has both positive historical moments and negative, but they all tie back to Chicanos and their history.
