Setting and Point of View for Jason Michael Carroll 's song “Alyssa Lies” Kaitlynn Zollman Ivy Tech Community College-Sellersburg What would one do if their young daughter came to them and told them that her classmate was lying to everyone and apparently had bruises? In the song Alyssa Lies by Jason Michael Carroll, the song is told in first person point of view because the father tells the story about how his daughter comes to him and tells him that she believes her new friend at school is lying to the teachers and she tries hiding her bruises from them. The song demonstrates a dynamic type of setting because it changes between the father and the daughter and also throughout the song. The functions of the song occur in the daytime at the school and then bedtime at the home of the two. As the song changes characters, the setting of the song changes as well. The narrator is still the father but as he describes when his daughter is telling him about the issues, the setting changes. As the song plays through the setting changes once again to the school because the father is taking his daughter and learns the young girl had passed away. When a song or story is told, the functions of the story plays a major key in how the story gets across to readers. Alyssa Lies has a very emotional story that is being told throughout the entire song. The atmosphere of the song is sad and would hit home to many of the readers or listeners. When someone reads or hears the chorus, they can feel the sadness, but they also can visualize what is going on when the daughter tells the father about what is happening at school.
