Today many college students engage and participate in a study abroad program in order to experience what life is like in a different part of the world. Studying abroad can enhance learning, foster personal growth, and develop a different perspective on the culture. In general, traveling abroad changes your outlook on the world forever and broadens your horizons. Just like any college student, Amanda Knox decided to study abroad in Perugia, Italy. However, the way Amanda planned her travels is not how most people, including myself, would do to pursue in studying abroad.
Amanda Knox chose to study in Perugia, Italy because she basically wanted to be different than everyone around her. Even though she had a strong background in Germany since her mother was born there and her grandmother spoke German to her growing up as a child, she decided to find a language and country of her own. Also, Amanda had already visited Germany once before when she was fourteen to visit relatives and celebrate Oktoberfest in Munich. It all began even before traveling to Perugia when she decided to plan her trip and travel abroad on her own without, as Amanda said, “a herd of American students” (Knox, 9) though a study abroad college program. Amanda was convinced that if she didn’t go with a program she could submerge into the culture and get a better experience than them. However, she never considered her own safety in a foreign country. Most of all she wanted to prove to her parents she was prepared to live on her own and had everything under control in order to study abroad in Italy.
