In Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, the ending is changed, as many who read it believed it to be too dark. The lack of a happy ever after ending did not sit well with most people however it brings realism and closure. Throughout the novel Pip and Estella develop as characters and are characters whom many desire to get together by the end of the story. Character development is very important to recognize in this novel. The ambiguous ending which was implemented in the final version meets the desires of all as it could be interpreted in many different ways such as a possibility of a future loving relationship. He is the main character of the story and as such we watch him the most from his young life to grown up Pip. Pip is different than most of the characters as he also narrates the novel, thus we get to see his feelings and thought process from his perspective. This is also to important to note as we see the difference in grown up Pip to younger naïve Pip. Pip throughout the story receives many of his wishes fulfilled such as becoming a high class gentleman or wishing harm to his evil sister. Though he never gets Estella whom he desires most of the novel and makes decisions in order to get her. The ambiguous ending allows for the possibility for a future relationship to occur. The reader wants Pip to end up with Estella but the things he did to do it are horrifying. He cuts out members of his life Biddy and Joe in order to achieve his goal in becoming a gentleman of high class to in order to start his love life with her. Estella’s torment of Pip led to his desire to better himself in order to attain her love. Pip’s initial relationship with Estella was because of his want for her class.
