Introduction: I. Attention Getter: Amelia Earhart is a symbol of bravery and a inspiration for women everywhere. II. Motivation for Listening: Many of the student at the class are female, and probably a lot of them have sisters, daughters or friends that can be inspired by her story. III. Thesis Statement: Her great accomplishment as a barrier breaker on societal norms and her bravery as a woman have left a mark on society for the better. IV. Preview of Speech (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.): I would like to talk about who she was, the obstacles she had to overcome and how she changed society and the opinion on women. The first time she saw an airplane as a little girl she wasn’t very impressed, but years later at an airshow her interest for planes was awakened, and when she first rode an airplane she just knew that what was she wanted to do. Transition: Now that we know who she is lets we can talk about the obstacles she overcame. II. Second Main Point a. As a child she had to suffer through her father’s alcoholism and later her parents’ divorce. After her parents’ divorce she stayed with her mother and they went to live to Chicago. Her father’s struggle with alcohol and money gave her a strong desire for stability and a great dislike for alcohol. b. Being a woman was difficult enough at that time especially in fields that were dominated almost completely by men. She had to overcome financial problems working on several jobs she managed to buy her first plane. Transition: Her obstacles were many, but this leads us to our final point; what she achieved by overcoming them. III. Third Main Point a. Her courage and vision have inspired many more women to do what was thought impossible or frowned upon for a woman to do. b. In one of her more famous quotes she tells us to take the failure of others as a challenge to do what the others could not
