Do you think you know what happened to Amelia Earhart? A theory most likely popped into your head the moment you read that, but have you actually thought the theory through and compared it with others? If so, are you sure about it? Human curiosity has the tendency fill in gaps of the unknown. It's in our nature that we make up theories and conspiracies to feel a sense of closure for mysterious happenings and events. One of the greatest mysterious events involved Earhart, as she is one of the most famous pioneer aviators and missing persons. She achieved many flying feats, including the time she shocked the nation in 1922, “When she became the first woman to fly solo above 14,000 feet.” (“Amelia Earhart”). Distinguished Flying Cross: “A military decoration awarded for ‘heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight.’ She was the first woman to receive the honor.” (“Amelia Earhart”). On June 1, 1937, Earhart set out to take her most daring feat yet: planning to become the first pilot to fly across the world. After her first failed attempt, Earhart was set on accomplishing her second time. During her expedition around the world, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan flew towards their next refueling stop to the very small Howland Island. This is when Earhart and Noonan lost radio connection with the U.S. military, mysteriously disappearing near the landing site. A search crew was set out to find hers and Noonans remains, “Commencing one of the greatest air-sea searches in history, which quickly involved the U.S. Navy.” (“Naval Aviation”).
