Women were slowly gaining their respect through one heroic hero named Amelia Earhart. Amelia was one of the best known American women in the 20th century through her bravery and standing up for what she believed in. She changed the belief that women cannot fly their own planes. The Vega was sturdy, fast, and had a powerful engine. The Vega was great for racing. Amelia took it to the Women’s Air Derby where she placed 3rd. With more experience she wanted a new challenge. She set to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone. Earhart took off from Newfoundland, Canada on May 20, 1932. Everything was running smoothly till the altimeter stopped working. The altimeter told Earhart how high she was above the ocean, but now can’t keep track. The weather got worse and her engine began to fail. As worried as she was, she still had faith in herself that she was going to make it. The next morning she was relieved to see land. Amelia Earhart flew across the Atlantic Ocean.
