Non-profit organizations play an important role in our communities. Their purpose goes beyond making a profit for their personal interest. Through the establishment of an organized group of people, they advocate for a particular cause and use any earned revenue to further achieve the mission that they as an organization seek. They act as intermediaries between the community and an authority, establish a framework for citizen participation, and provide networking opportunities for the members, volunteers and the community where the ability to build rapport with both new and existing members, and further educate people on a particular cause exists. When 99 of the 117 women showed up to the meeting, the ladies decided to call it the 99’s upon Amelia’s request. Amelia Earhart played a significant role in the development of the group. As a well-respected pilot in the aviation world, she established many aviation flying records. She was the first woman to solo fly across the Atlantic and the first to fly from Honolulu to Oakland. In this regard, Amelia not only set records, she also went on to break many of her own records. With all the accolades and her passion for flying, she became the first President of The 99’s thus giving her the recognition for founding the organization. In accord with that, the first Charter Members were the first 99 women (Ninety-Nines). Today, The Ninety-Nines Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots is spread around thirty five countries with distinct Regions and Chapters. Membership is open to any women holding a pilot license but also includes life members, emeritus members, Ninety-nines, and associate members. Women student pilots are free to join as student pilot members as long as they hold a current student pilot certificate. Once a student receives their license, they become eligible to join as full members (Ninety-Nines). Having membership provides for many benefits that aid in helping to achieve, friendship and camaraderie with other women pilots and gaining access to educational and professional resources, the support of scholarships among countless other
