1491 by Charles Mann is a book about the Native Indians lives in a pre-Colombian America. Throughout the book Mann states that a great deal of the information he is giving is new speculation. However, not all of the speculation has evidence clear enough for one to be sure what he claims is true. Mann’s writing style is thought provoking, intriguing, and engaging. Mann specializes in scientific journalism.
This book sounds extremely good. I cannot imagine what these thirty-three men went through in those seventeen days. So many things happened in those days. This author sounds like he did as much as he could to portray how and what happened in the mine. There were so many stories he told that were very moving.

I believe Erdrich book moves away from stereotypes and describes nineteenth-century Native Americans as individuals with rich traditions and customs. Erdrich is able to describe the Native American culture during the Westward Expansion of the United States in a realistic and sympathetic way through the eyes of an Ojibwa Indian girl. She also personalizes this story with her own drawings as a testimony of her Native American family roots.
Although many history classes have taught us that Native American societies were primitive, Charles Mann along with other historians argued that Native Americans did possessed a complexed history prior to Columbus, closer examination shows that they had large rich societies in, architecture, and agriculture. Mann believes the “Indian” population was larger, and their societies more accomplished, than was earlier believed. He estimates 40-60 million, but the count keeps rising. Another false belief was that the Indians lived on the land without touching it. In fact, they used "slash and burn" to clear and create grasslands for cultivation.
In chapter one of “The Wilding of America”, Charles Derber highlights the importance of wilding in society and explained the different types of wilding that exist in society. Derber (2015) define the word wilding as “self-interested or self-indulgent behavior that harms another and weakens the social fabric”. Although Axtell does justify the position of the Natives in many cases, he does not believe that the newcomers were the only cause of the cultural schism between themselves and the locals.
Human tendency to categorize others extends to simple instinct. From the moment a baby is born, the first question already categorizes the baby: boy or girl. In Richard Rodriguez’s Brown: The Last Discovery of America, he addresses these ideals of categorizations, untangling arduous inner conflicts in the process. Due to his diversity, Rodriguez feels unwanted and omitted in his day-to-day life. Feeling uncategorized, Rodriguez journeys to discover new parts of himself and embrace them, as well as question societal norms.
My opinion about this chapter is that the writer had different view of Native Americans than what most Americans have today. Americans view the natives as a peaceful people when in fact they fought over land, killed their enemies and torched them they were violent in their own way but they were not as violent as the white people so in my opinion the writer was wrong about saying the Native Americans were as violent as the Americans. An other thing that in my opinion the writer was wrong was by saying the Native Americans were as wasteful by killing the buffalo as the americans were when in fact they were not. There were not as many Natives as Americans so the killing number of participants was lower and when the natives killed the buffalo it was eaten by wolves while in the American side they were not eaten by wolves. In my opinion the author had a different view of the Native Americans than what most people have.

The Columbian Exchange is a mark in history that has lead to pivotal outcomes that has affected the world today as well as the past. The Exchange between the old and new world has brought advances to today’s world due to sacrifices and interactions between two distinctly different populations. Both worlds introduced one another to new diseases, and resources that overall lead to advancements in research and new resources of survival to help sustain populations in both worlds, which have carried over into present day and has allowed for the development of the human population. Sustainable populations allowed individuals to no longer concentrate solely on survival rather have time to research and expand knowledge about health practices and give attention to preventing deadly epidemics. Although the interaction of disease did give rise to deadly epidemics in the new world the advancements made in medicine changed how disease and illness were treated and further allowed a change in perspective about health and survival.

What I liked about A Land Remembered, by Patrick D. Smith, was the character develop. All the characters, including Pearlie Mae, Lester, and Glenda all have a background and special personalities. For example, even though Pearlie Mae was mention only for a couple of sentences in the book, Patrick still gave her certain features, such as her weight and height, and also incorporated her in the story well. Something I did not like about the book though was that there were some chapters in the book that were either off plot or were just used as filling chapters to make the book longer. Some things in the book were unnecessary towards the main goal of the story.
