Have you ever got made fun of by a stereotype that isn’t really you, but it is just about your race or ethnicity? American Born Chinese is a comic book written by Gene Luen Yang and it is about a kid living in America, he is Chinese, which makes him deal with a lot of stereotypes. Jin is made fun of by the kids around him about what they think a typical Chinese acts. The people around him make up stereotypes, for example what he eats, his hairstyle, and the people who he is friends with. In our society people make stereotypes about others without knowing about them and the individual chooses to either stay with what they believe in or they acculturate to what the society around them believes in. Jin, being Chinese, not being the most social kid, and not fitting in with the social norms, is evidence of how the stereotypes have changed how Jin has acted since getting made fun of about his race. He doesn’t have any friends to sit with at lunch, hang out during free time, or even to just talk to for any help. This stays the same until his new buddy Wei-Chen comes to the school. Wei-Chen is a very weird Chinese character who isn’t up to the latest fashion style. Jin is very embarrassed around Wei-Chen because he is a very crazy guy and he always looks funny with his hair style. Jin expresses how much he dislikes Wei-Chen when he says “I have enough friends”. This shows that Jin wants Wei-Chen to go away because he is so embarrassing and annoying to be around. As the story goes on Jin keeps getting more annoyed with Wei-Chen because he starts acculturating to how people act around him. For example, Wei-Chen starts getting more gangster as the story goes on. Being different is hard for Jin when he moves schools and he is constantly made fun of for how he is
