In a society where discrimination and prejudice continue to persist, embracing diversity may often be challenging for some individuals who fear social rejection. Similarly, self acceptance can sometimes be even more difficult to embrace as a minority. In the graphic novel, American Born Chinese, author Gene Luen Yang, emphasized that attempting to conforming to society in order to fit in will ultimately lead to a rejection of your true self. Yang’s novel ties in with the american religious experience by revealing that, self acceptance is critical in order to mature as an individual and truly appreciate the culture and religion that we are apart of. For instance, as a result of the monkey king being publically humiliated, “the morning after the dinner party the monkey king issued a decree throughout all of flower-fruit mountain. All monkeys must wear shoes” (Yang 55). Something that the monkey king never even considered prior to the party now was so prevalent in his mind that he had to make it a rule. This is a clear example of altering yourself in order to fit in. much like the monkey king's needs to realize that his identity should not be altered by the opinions of others, it is important to accept who you are when it comes to religion in america as well. It is also shown by Individuals should never alter their beliefs that they feel strongly about because of the fear that they won't be accepted or that they will be made fun of for the things they believe in or what they practice. Also though, americans need to become more open to the idea of other religions and even if they don't know much about a specific religion, they should respect all individuals who wish to practice that religion. america needs to remain the culturally and religiously diverse country but further their knowledge on other religions and become more accepting of
