The first story starts off by following an almighty Monkey King on his quest for immortality and a spot in heaven. The Monkey king is blinded by power as he embarks on his journey, and Tze-Yo-Tzuh, the creator of all things, must humble him; Tze-Yo-Tzuh traps the Monkey King under rocks, telling him he cannot be freed until he embraces his monkey nature. During his conversation with his father about humans, Wei-Chen claims that, “I’ve found humans to be petty, soulless creatures. The thought of serving them sickens me”(Yang 219) and “...But anything is better than a lifetime of servitude to humans”(Yang 220). In the first quote, Wei-Chen explains to his father why he adores humans while in the second, he explains why he would rather not be an emissary of Tze-Yo-Tzuh and not serve humans. The two quotes mentioned above show how humankind has become so rotten that one would give up all the benefits of being an emissary for the creator of all just because of the fact that you must serve humans. Wei-Chen developed such a negative impression of mankind as a result of the racism and bullying he experienced at school as a result of his Taiwanese heritage. These quotes illustrate how insecure one can get about their identity and personality due to stereotyping and bullying; they also illustrate that stereotypes and bullying can negatively affect a person's self-esteem which may adversely affect their mental, emotional, and physical well-being for a lifetime. Furthermore, the quotations above demonstrate that bullying and stereotyping can also cause a bullied individual to develop stereotypes about those who have bullied or abused them.
