Imagine you are in a hospital, your doctor enters the room and breaks the news to you. You have cancer. You may feel nervous scared or even hopeless. Many people in past years have been diagnosed and it meant almost certain death. Thanks to the American Cancer Society and all their research efforts cancer has become a much less intimidating disease. In 1913 a group of fifteen people decided that the public needed to know about cancer if any cure was to be found. In order to find new information, the American Cancer Society’s cancer research team sorts through statistics on cancer to learn from their past and possibly discover a trend in something that causes cancer. The research team for the American Cancer Society also studies patients’ behavior and psychosocial factors to find more ways to quickly and easily diagnose patients that have cancer. The American Cancer Society also conducts large scale prevention studies to aid in their mission to prevent cancer and “have a world with more birthdays.” Through these studies, the American Cancer Society has gained many achievements. A few of these achievements include verifying the link between smoking and lung cancer and finding evidence of cancer risks related to obesity. This mission is operated entirely by volunteers working to raise money for various kinds of research to help prevent cancer.
