The American College of Sports Medicine The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is the largest sports medicine exercise science organization in the world. ACSM contains more than fifty thousand members and certified professionals worldwide. Walter Thompson from Georgia State University runs this professional association. Walter has made sure that the American College of Sports Medicine stays dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine. A small group of physical educators and physicians who recognized health problems founded the ACSM in 1954. They noticed that health problems were associated with certain lifestyle choices, such as lack of exercise and smoking. Since 1954, members from professional backgrounds have applied their knowledge, training, and dedication in sports medicine and exercise science to promote healthier lifestyles for those around the globe. In 1984, the American College of Sports Medicine National Center relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. A visionary approach and strong heritage leads the association to grow and prosper both nationally and internationally. The first year, it is only ten dollars to join the association. Although, there are some requirements to join. You must meet at least one of the three requirements to become a member. The first requirement is to be a full time undergraduate student in exercise science of sports medicine with twelve or more credit hours. The second requirement is to have earned a bachelor's degree in the fields and be taking six or more credit hours. The final requirement is to be a medical student who has been accepted into medical school and is currently completing at least one half of full academic
