How Our Government Came to Be In the year of 1787 the founding fathers successfully came to an agreement that helped create our governmental system. Out of this compromise; the Articles of Confederation changed into the U.S Constitution. The creation of the Constitution led to a transformation in the division of powers. The founding fathers did not want to give one-man full control over the country. They figured that there needed to be a voice for the people, but also one for the nation.
The ratification of the constitution occurred between 1787-1789. Just prior to this, the colonists had defeated the French and Indians in the Seven Years War (a.k.a. French and Indian War), and immediately following the victory the British ended their salutary neglect towards the colonies and began to tax the the colonists in order to pay for the war. These events sparked a chain reaction that saw the colonists declare independence and defeat the British in the Revolution. This brings us to the constitutional convention whose task was to design a government for the people, by the people.
According to the materiel Of The People, moderate nationalists wanted to create a stronger central government while the radical localists resisted fearing that this would subvert their liberties. The nationalists in congress realized that the national government was powerless concerning the current economic issues, they lacked money and could not pay the army they had. In the middle 1780’s several nationalists began to call for a constitutional convention. Before the Constitutional Convention in 1787 there were two previous meetings. Over the summer of 1787, 55 men from twelve states wrote a document to strengthen their government, this became one of the most influential documents in the history of the world.
The Great Compromise, also known as the Connecticut compromise, resolved many issues having to do with representation. This agreement was made at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The debate was between large states and small states. The compromise is the number of representatives in the lower house would be decided according to the population of every state; one representative that is elected for every one thousand residents. This was changed to thirty thousand recently before the constitution was signed.
The government was created by the people and for the people, so the people are the ones who have sovereignty in the US. The Preamble states “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union… do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” The Declaration of Independence supports this by saying the people are entitled to three basic rights; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If the government tries to dishonor these basic rights then the people have the power to abolish that government. 4.
After the 13 colonies had declared independence from Britain and King George, they were quick to draft their own constitution. Most of which was inspired by Enlightenment thinkers and their philosophies, like those of John Locke, Montesquieu, and copious amount of more. The Articles of Confederation first drafted in the year 1777, but was not ratified until 1781. Nonetheless, this was quickly changed when people realized that the Articles of Confederation was ineffective. Therefore, it was replaced and led to the Constitution to be drafted.
The Framers anticipated that the U.S. Constitution would need to be amended from time to time, what James Madison referred to as “to originate the amendment of errors.” he 55 Framers who met in Philadelphia during the spring and summer of 1787 understood that they were drafting a Constitution to last a very long time. “We are not forming plans for a Day Month Year or Age,” delegate John Dickinson wrote, “but for Eternity.” Of course, a document designed to last a very long time must include a method of amendment. In crafting their amendment procedures, the Framers resorted to two mechanisms widely employed at the time: legislatures and conventions.
During the constitutional convention one of the first heated disagreements was between large states and the people who represented the small states. Delegates from Virginia wanted two houses to contain a biameral legislative. Based on the state's population is the number of representatives given to each state. According to page 45, “ In each state representatives in the lower house would be elected by popular vote.” Once representatives are elected by popular vote, than those representatives would be selected.
American Exceptionalism was coined by Alexis de Tocqueville in his book Democracy in America. To illustrate how the American way of thought is superior to the other ways of the world, Tocqueville expresses that the American way of thought is distinctively unique and special. This distinction is exemplified through liberty, egalitarianism, individualism, populism, and Laissez-Faire Economics. These qualities prove America’s exceptionality and difference from other countries. Although American Exceptionalism originated in the early 1800s, the idyllic values Tocqueville paints in his book can be seen throughout American history.
The lesson I would pick as the most important to teach to someone in American History is The U.S Constitution. America’s first government document was written on September 17, 1787 by delegates to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, lead over by George Washington. What the U.S Constitution did was it set up America’s national government, fundamental laws and it promised to give basic rights for its citizens. At the 1787 convention, delegates came up with an idea to have a more powerful federal government with three branches; executive, legislative and judicial branch with a system of checks and balances to make sure a certain branch did not take too much control over another one or was at the top of the other branches. Also, the
INTRODUCTION Throughout the Philadelphia Convention of 1787 there were different disputes, mainly centered on the issues of slavery and tariffs. These disputes finally lead to a compromise reached by the delegates present. The northern economy was primarily centered around industrialization. In contrast, the southern economy was mostly agricultural, and widely relied on slaves, as they were the cheapest form of labor accessible.
The Constitutional Convention occurred from May 14 to September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The tradition was held to address issues in overseeing the United States, which had been working under the Articles of Confederation taking after freedom from Great Britain. In spite of the fact that the tradition was expected to modify the Articles of Confederation, the aim from the beginning of a number of its defenders, boss among them James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, was to make another government as opposed to settle the current one. The agents chose George Washington to direct the tradition. The aftereffect of the tradition was the United States Constitution, setting the tradition among the hugest occasions in the historical backdrop
The United States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. There are seven articles and 27 amendments in the Constitution. It helps set up the government by providing the basic law of the body politic. If I could change one thing about the constitution, I would change the second amendment: " Right to keep and bear arms. " It means that people have the right to own and carry weapons; however, when we hear the word "weapons", we will think of guns.
At all constitutional conventions many argument's come up, and those who propose an idea believe the idea that they proposed is ideal. What doesn't cross their mind is that not everyone will agree with their ideas, in fact in the famous constitutional convention of the United States there were a lot of disagreements, "Serious conflicts arose at the outset, especially between those representing the small and large States" (Bloom). This shows that even though most of the delegates in the American Constitutional Convention soon became important figures in U.S history after the constitution was drafted, they did not agree on the same thing. In the constitutional convention of NuCountry many topics were brought up to be voted on. Most of the
Exceptionalism is the notion that a certain state (such as the United States) is inherently more advanced than other states. Society positions the exception as the new normal, which marginalizes undesirable populations. Thus, the self-proclaimed exceptional state claims moral superiority—and authority—over inferior states.
