The supervisor established a dual relationship that may not follow the ethical, legal, and/or professional standards of practice, by establishing a business relationship with a current client and two former clients. The issues related to the current client and the two former clients becoming tenants of the supervisor, involves the potential of the current client and/or former client to be exposed to harm and/or exploitation. The issue of the supervisor becoming a landlord for a current client involves the potential of impairment of abilities in providing mental health services to current client. The practice-based ethical decision making model (Corey, Corey, Callahan, 1998) is appropriate to follow in the ethical decision making process related to determining whether to report this ethical concern. Documenting in personal notes, the interaction with the couple is the first step in addressing the ethical, legal and professional concerns related to the dual relationship of the supervisor and current client and former clients. This review determined that the risk of exploitation of the current client and the two former clients does not apply, because the mental health counselor is charging below market value and addressing the housing needs of the clients (ACA, 2014, C.6.d; National Board for Certified Counselors [NBCC], 2016, 5,6.; Department of Regulatory Agencies [DORA], 2011, p. 10; C.R.S. 12-43-222 (1)(i)).
