Primarily, the American Dream is alive and well due to society's perception of its attainability. A survey conducted by the American Enterprise Institute showed 8 in 10 Americans feel they are living or are about to achieve the American Dream. Clearly, Americans feel as though the dream is still attainable. The American Dream as an idea, is therefore upheld because Americans continue to have faith in it. Countless Americans believe that the dream is readily available if only they work hard enough. Thus, the American Dream still stands strong. The American Dream is alive and well due to the shift in the nation's morality. During the 2008 recession, the New York Times discovered that 44% of Americans believed they had achieved the American Dream, which was 12% higher than years previous. Experts claim that during hard times, people shift their morals. Understandably, America has seen extremely difficult times recently with the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past few years, the morality of American society has shifted, due to the worldwide crisis. Take for example Michelle Obama's 2012 speech where she proclaims, “If farmers and blacksmiths could win independence from an empire, if immigrants could leave everything they knew for a better life on our shores, surely we could give everyone in this country a fair chance at the American Dream”.
