John Steinbeck is a famous American author. He wrote many books that take place in the Salinas River Valley during the Great Depression. His most famous book, Of Mice and Men, talks about the failure of the American Dream. John Steinbeck uses Lennie, Crooks, and Curley's wife to show the failure of the American Dream. To begin, John Steinbeck uses Lennie to show the failure of the American Dream. Lennie is a big, strong man and he’s a migrant farmer. He is cognitively impaired, but is a very hard worker. He is looked after by his best friend George. He is very friendly and loves to touch soft things. Lennie is in the barn with his puppy when Curley’s wife walks in. At first Lennie doesn't want to talk to her because George told him not to but, after a while he warms up to her and starts talking to her. When he tells Curley’s wife about his dream, Lennie says ” We gonna have a little place, we gonna have a house and a garden with a place for the alfalfa. The alfalfa is for the rabbits. I take a sack, and fill it with alfalfa, then take it to the rabbits (Steinbeck 89)”. This quote proves that Lennie has an …show more content…

Crooks is the only black man in Salinas River Valley for many many miles. He is crippled and has a broken back. He is very old, but really hard working. He is also really lonely. Crooks is sitting in his room listening to Lennie talk about his dream, when Crooks says “If you guys would want a hand to work for nothing, why’d i’d come and lend a hand (Steinbeck 76)”. This quote proves that crooks has an American Dream. As we go on in the story, after George kills Lennie he feels he has no reason to fulfill his dream since his best friend won’t be there with him. So, since he calls off the plan crooks won’t be able to work for them anymore.
