American Education System
Many Americans would argue that America is the best country in the world. Yet statistically speaking, the United States is low ranking in the education division. Surprising right? Well, maybe not. “Sixty six percent of all U.S. fourth graders scored "below proficient" on the 2013 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) reading test, meaning that they are not reading at grade level. Even more alarming is the fact that among students from low-income backgrounds, 80 percent score below grade level in reading.” Clearly we are doing something wrong. Don’t get me wrong; majorities of this country seem to agree that education is a focal point to the success of this nation, whether it be economically or socially. As a student myself (And I wish only to speak for myself) the standards have progressively declined. To survive in this competitive environment I’ve had to resort to the technique of memorization (Something I am not proud of.) Most exams today are written in a multiple choice and/or true or false platform. Assessments that challenge the minds of young students are just not part of the curriculum. “The Florida State Board of Education today adopted a new performance level standard for FCAT Writing. The performance level standard used for the purpose of calculating school grades for 2011-12 school year will be on a 3.0 on a scale of 6.0” The educational system is not setting up students for success, it’s setting them up for failure. In this day and age problem-solving skills are not being reinforced to solve real world problems. In a global market as large as ours, it is fundamental we are prepared for basic mathematical skillsets. And we’re just not there. Global school rankings have shown countries such as Singapore, Honk Kong, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Finland placing in the top five based on math and sciences in the age fifteens category.
