Within the Middle East, civilizations have thrived for centuries. While some of these civilizations were very insignificant within the pages of history, there were also many influential states which existed throughout different periods of time. Two people who tend to parallel one another were the Seljuks and the Ottomans. While the Seljuks lived primarily in modern day Iran from around 1037–1308, the Ottomans appeared farther west in modern day Turkey and existed from around 1299-1922. Both empires, while not centered within the same region, ruled over much of the Middle East and left an impact on the land. Instead, the citizens of the empire would turn it into a Constitutional Monarchy similar to many others and create their own Parliament (“Flag of Ottoman Empire”). These sultans also ruled over some of the same lands. Lands such as Syria, Iraq, Israel, and Anatolia. Of course the Seljuks themselves pushed farther east into Iran, also known as Persia, and Central Asia (Bunting). The Ottomans on the other hand held much closer to the Mediterranean and Red seas, controlling parts of Arabia along with Egypt, the Balkans, and much of North Africa over to modern Algeria and Tunis (“Ottoman Empire - Osman, Orhan, Expansion”). Culture The main similarity these two empires share is their heritage. Both empires are Turkic, with the Seljuks being specifically from the Oghuz Turks. The Seljuk family itself is a breakoff from the Oghuz, with the name Seljuk being after Seljuk the one who initiated the split (Bearman et al.). The Ottomans, on the other hand, are named after Osman I who first ruled over a small Anatolian duchy in the Sultanate of Rum, the last remnant of the Seljuk dynasty (“Ottoman …show more content…
