Have you ever heard of the phrase “American Idiot?” If you have then you have definitely heard of the punk pop band Green Day. This amazing band from the 90’s changed music forever. Since 1992 all three band members have stayed in the band and all had some troubling personal lives, but this band had an incredible impact on music today.
The band has been together for many years. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt have been together since age ten. Then at age fourteen they formed their first real band called the “Sweet Children”. The pair eventually changed the name to Green Day and played gigs. With John Kiffmeyer as the drummer at the time, the band signed with the punk label Lookout! In 1990 the band recorded their first full length album. Eventually Kiffmeyer left to focus on his studies and taking over on the drums in 1992 was Tre Cool. They introduced pop punk to many people today. Their songs are short and catchy but still tell a story or make you laugh. They make fun of some of the stupid things that Americans worry about and how dumb we can be sometimes like in the song “American Idiot”. They have also influenced many other bands to form including one of my favorite bands “Fall Out Boy”. Most bands today don 't have as much success as Green Day. They had some difficult times because they were making music that nobody really knew about. But this band really made it when they got a Diamond record. One of Green Day 's most famous albums, “American Idiot”, was such a hit that the group adapted it into a Broadway play. Billie Joe Armstrong was so into the Broadway play he starred as St Jimmy in over 50 performances. This band is even in the Rock and Roll hall of fame and has won many Grammy Awards. Still with all their fame and success the band members still have time for their family. Now they are taking time off.
