The American Nurses Association (ANA) was founded in 1896 by a group of nursing alumnae under the name of the Nurses Associated Alumnae and was renamed the American Nurses Association in 1911. It is a professional organization offering continuing education to nurses, nursing conferences and setting professional nursing standards. It serves registered nurses in each state, the District of Columbia, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. The ANA sets high standards for register nurses, is an advocate for health issues, and works to improve quality health care. The ANA mission statement: “nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all”.
