Parenting is a considerable responsibility that has the ability to impact not only those within our own family systems, but communities and even future generations. As Christians, this reality is further buttressed in the scriptures where it discusses the importance of continuously sharing not only the Word of God, but our experiences along the way. So important is this admonition that the Bible states that we must “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6, King James Version). Therefore, if we want out children to go “the way of the Lord”, then we must train them. When it concerns American parenting, we find that our “style” differs from those around the world. And while there are many different styles, one thing is for sure—we have seen our fair share of challenges. According to The National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement (n.d.), “positive parent-child relationships provide the foundation for children’s learning” (para. 4). For example, there is an organization called Parents as Teachers which seeks to promote “the optimal early development, learning and health of young children by supporting and engaging their parents” (Parents as Teachers, n.d., para. 1). Empirically, they boast that their model can engage parents in such a way that they learn to become more involved in their child’s studies as well as become more effective parents (Parents as Teachers, n.d., para 2.).
