Have you ever asked yourself who is the most important person in history. Clara Barton has had more impact on American society and culture than any other person in history for the three following reasons she was a nurse in the civil war, she founded the American Red Cross, and she was a teacher/patent officer. Clara Barton was widely recognized for her remarkable leadership and humanitarian accomplishments. Presidents, generals, soldiers, and royalty recognized her great contributions to society. Children, schools, streets, and several retail items were named in her honor.
Before the First World War, the Red Cross introduced its “first aid, water safety, and public health nursing programs” (Who is Clara Barton, 2008) In regards to natural disasters, they provided relief for the Great Depression during the 1930s and also the during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which was the largest Red Cross Response in it’s history. Here they provided millions of people with food, shelter, and money to get back on their feet, emotional support, etc. Their first congressional charter was received in 1900 and the second in 1905. Then their third was adopted in May 2007 which “restates the traditional purposes of the organization” which includes being a form of communication between those in the American armed forces and their families as well as providing an international and national disaster relief and mitigation (Who is Clara Barton, 2008).

Social Work With Veterans In the United States there are currently more than 2.7 million veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Each year these military members return home from war only to face obstacles such as unemployment, medical and mental health issues, and homelessness. Social workers are dedicated to the men and women who have served and are currently serving our country and the VA employs more social workers than any other U.S. agency (Malai, 2015). Social workers are continuously working with social service programs whose goal is eliminate homelessness in the veteran community, combat unemployment in the post-deployed, and provide outstanding medical and mental health care through VA programs.
Veteran’s Benefits Veteran’s pay a heavy price for our freedom, but do we in turn repay them back? Once veteran’s return home they receive several benefits, such as education, disability compensation, and low-cost medical care. Each are specific due to how they benefit each veteran, but not all are capable of fully providing the veteran. Veterans receive benefits based on discharge from active military service other than dishonorable conditions. Active service must be serving full time as a member under several branches, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, or as a commissioned officer of the Public Health Service, Environmental Services Administration or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

These are all things that people in refugee camps around the world could only dream of. Unfortunately we cannot help all of the refugees in the world, but if we can help just a few it will make a difference. We can help out by providing funds to organisations like the UN and also by raising awareness for the refugees. We can also educate our children about the conditions that the refugees have to live in and how they can raise awareness and support for the cause. These are all viable ways to raise awareness for the refugees, but that does not guarantee that they will be helped.
Describe any service that you’ve done in the past year. If you could help any charitable/service organization, which would it be and why? * Service is an important aspect in my life. Whether it is donating your time, talent, or treasure, I believe that giving back is an important attribute in growing as an individual. Throughout my time in highschool and up onto this very day I continue my philanthropic work with the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey.
