Introduction Leadership has been around since the beginning of civilization. However, there are many different definitions and expectations of leaders. There is no set guide on how to be a successful leader. It is important to analyze different leaders and leadership styles to see that there are different ways to lead, but they can be just as effective.
Description of Leadership
According to Weiss and Tappen (2015), “leaders are those who engage others to work together effectively in pursuit of a shared goal” (p.4). This definition of leadership has several components. She went as far as, the battle lines in order to provide rapid care. Her care for people and humanitarianism led to her eventually forming the American Red Cross in 1881 (Harmen, 2010). By forming the American Red Cross she was able to help people who suffered from war and natural disasters to get medical attention and supplies. Clara Barton could not do reach all of these populations and provide all of those supplies on her own. One of these being perseverance. She struggled with the United States government to accept the Treaty of Geneva, which provided protection to those participating in conflict who were injured, prisoners of war, and to healthcare providers as well (Forrester, 2016). She pleaded with the government for many years to be agree to the treaty. Eventually, she had to wait until President Garfield took office for the treaty to be established (Forrester, 2016). During this time, Barton showed optimism, perseverance, and initiative; qualities that make an effective leader. She took the initiative to bring attention to a need that the country had. She showed optimism by not getting discouraged when she was turned down and she showed perseverance by not discontinuing her efforts until her goal was
