American Work Ethic and Drives What do people do when they strive to earn,or do something in their life? They work for it, constantly, until they get what they desired. I personally feel as if I have a great work ethic that was passed down to me by my parents. I strive to be my the best person I can be and reach all the goals I set for myself, whether that’s in the classroom, on the baseball field, in my job, or just being a good person in general. I feel work ethic has developed a new meaning over time in American literature. It has different types of meanings in stories and films such as, Of Plymouth Plantation, The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Forrest Gump. Of Plymouth Plantation, a story written by William Bradford around the time period of the 1630s, was generally about how people worked hard, and if not were consequenced with death due to not doing enough or not working as hard as needed be. He works to solve crimes, get himself back in Beck’s favor and tries to get her back, and also works to fulfill his happiness. “We’ll explore it again. They’ve hid treasures here somewhere. Tom aslo dreamed about having becky back in his life. The text states, “Tom’s face lighted; he gazed a moment, and then turned sorrowfully away. When Jeff arrived, Tom accosted him; and ‘led up’ warily to opportunities for remark about Becky, but the giddy lad never could see the bait. Tom watched and watched, hoping whenever a frisking frock came in sight.”(Twain). This didn’t involve life or death nor doing illegal acts, but it involved Tom working to be a better person all around and be the person that Becky once knew and
