The Literary Works of Ernest Hemingway Ernest Hemingway is thought of as one of the greatest American writers of his era. A literature wizard of the prose style that became his signature,in 1954 he received a nobel prize in literature. Even though his writing structure is pleasant, he is a highly criticized writer, and his works bring upon a great amount of controversy. His wide variety of setting, plot, characters, and his emphasis on masculinity, as well as his short, objective language, have gave critics the idea that his stories are dark and empty. Other people say that beneath the emptiness there is a very unique and fictional background. Hemingway began to blow up when he started writing short stories. Additionally, he was more than an American writer, he was a realist and was loved by all who knew him. It seems as if there was nothing he didn't do in his life, he witnessed and covered both World War I and II, was an avid fisher and was passionate about hunting, was married many times and he always made time to write stories about people who were facing many crises in their life, from death to several emotional difficulties. The characters Nick and Marjorie are characters that were made by Hemingway were known for their strong morals, and always stuck to them. Nick and Marjorie are very rebellious of what humanity wants them to be. “In Our Time” is a short story about Nick Adams, one of the characters created by Hemingway. He is a young juvenile who is looking for a destination to go. Throughout the story he experienced many obstacles such as going to war. Like Nick, Hemingway enlisted in the war and experienced some of the same hardships. In “The End of Something” some of the main themes are disappointment, change, devotion, separation and assumption. You could connect this short story to “In Our Time” because it goes deeper into detail about one of Nick's failed attempts at love. “The End of Something” is about a lost love between Nick adams and his wife Marjorie, from the events that happen in the story we can predict that it was written after “In Our Time”.
