When emotions outweigh morals, people tend to commit selfish acts that can hurt others. In terms of racial contexts, the characters in Brownies by ZZ Packer and Happy Trails by Sherman Alexie, are place under the impression of being inferior to high class groups whom create tensions of isolation around the characters, introduces detach family beliefs, and devalues the character's self-worth. The characters, Laurel and Alexie, experiences a fighting versus losing experience when they emotionally and/or physically clash with another group. From their conflict, they learn how cruel the world is and takes a resolve of coping with the world with an open-mind and accepting themselves. Despite being unsure of the issue taking place at all, the girls are already fire up by the scout leaders into taking action. No one suggests talking things through or looking at other possibilities except Laurel who was shut down when they call her "Snot", and with the many eyes of the girls whom already know what route to take, she is pressure to go along with the plan. At this point, Laurel is already uncomfortable and fears the consequences of the possible fight. It was impossible in getting out of the devise plan because everyone already wants to go along with the plan while Laurel was the only one being impediment(9 ZZ Packer). Even though this was suppose to be an activities camp, there is no friendly and team sport behavior in the camp since we can see that Laurel was force to go along with the activities her group makes. Laurel's group isolates her decisions and it makes her dislike them. He naturally views whites as two face backstabbers since they caused the "Battle of Wounded Knee" and "Little Bighorn"(Alexie). Back then, the US government was forcing Indians to either move into reservation camps or to move farther west. Most Indians decided to move west to avoid conflict with US government, however when gold was discovered in the west, the agreement was broken. The Battle of Little Bighorn started as a result of being betrayed by the white men. Also, in the Battle of Wounded Knee, the U.S. army attacked a group of weaponless Indians. At the time, the Indians were dancing around a fire. Taking advantage of their vulnerability, the U.S. army murdered many women, children, and men. Alexie, in his time, still view white men as people who would be two-face. They would look friendly at first but is actually a back stabbing murderer. His view of white men ties into the past, because in the past, it was the white men who made compromises with his people but then later on massacre them. His first inference on how his uncle possibly died is from getting murdered by "seemingly friendly white
