Everyone knows the morbid story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Two star-crossed lovers with their ups and downs. Two families with a past. We all know that Romeo and Juliet die, but who’s the most to blame for their deaths? Themselves? The person who is the most to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths is Friar Laurence. Friar Laurence is the most to indict for the casualty of Romeo and Juliet because he didn’t tell his messenger to hurry, he suggested Juliet have the will to kill herself, and finally he didn’t tell anyone else about his “master plan”. Friar Laurence thought he had it all figured out, but in reality, he just made mistake after mistake; like when he didn’t tell his messenger to hurry with his important letter to Romeo. While sending other letters the Friar sent a letter to give to Romeo(Shakespeare, 55). Romeo’s servant, Balthasar, left Verona as soon as he saw Juliet being put in the Capulet tomb(Shakespeare, 62). Juliet is 14. She wouldn’t have even thought of killing herself all on her own. The Friar planted that seed in her mind. Shakespeare writes, “If, rather than to marry County Paris, Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself”(54). The Friar is teaching children that if we have a problem that we don’t know how to face, that we should kill ourselves? How would that fix the predicament? The predicament that the Friar got them into might I add. At this point, Juliet is actually considering killing herself, yet the Friar comes along and is all like , “Wait. Don’t actually kill yourself, let’s fake your death.” And Juliet being the fourteen year old that she is agreed. After putting Juliet in the crypt, the Friar left when he could have stayed to wait for Romeo. But instead he had to send the letter he could have sent earlier.
