In Paragraph 40 of "Letter from Birmingham Jail", Dr. King expresses great disappointment in the contemporary church because the churches tended to lean towards the status quo. They hid behind various excuses and commended authority for treating nonviolent demonstrators harshly. He is, however, able to find hope in the spirits of individuals. Dr. King expresses disappointment in the inactivity of the church. Rather than act, churches often preached that segregation versus desegregation was a matter of the state.
Nonviolent resistance is one strategy that can be used in any movement or retaliation. In the 1960s, one man, named Martin Luther King, Jr. very much supported that idea. Response to “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. In Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, he responded to statements written in a Birmingham newspaper that criticized his actions in the city. He undermined these disapprovals by explaining his belief in nonviolent direct action. King also went on to give opinions on other topics, such as, the lack of support from white moderates and white churches. He used technique and structure to develop his ideas and justify his methods.
Dr. King was a strong voice for the Negroes and a champion who led them to fight against the unjust laws of segregation. He was foremost a civil rights activist throughout the 1950s and 1960s. during his lifetime, which lasted from January of 1929 to April of 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and a social activist and was known for his non- violent protests. He believed that all people, no matter the color, have a moral responsibility to break unjust laws and to take a direct action rather than waiting forever for justice to come through and finally be resolved. In the Spring of 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stated in a speech that Birmingham was among one of the most segregated cities in the world.
The letter that Dr. Martin Luther King wrote at the Birmingham Jail was very powerful to me. Things I took away from this letter is that people back then were discriminated even worse than they are now. Mr. King didn’t want violence protest that would eventually turn into riots, he always wanted the protests to be peaceful. This letter was a response to white men who criticized his tactics, I think King wrote this letter to explain the goal of his non-violent protest and that they were necessary. Dr. King never wanted violence to solve the problems black people faced, he just wanted them to be treated fairly like the whites.

Influenced by Thoreau and Gandhi for their similar ideas on peaceful protesting injustice in society, King created a group of nonviolent protesters across the south known as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). King’s whole movement was based around being nonviolent, King saw this as a way to get his message across peacefully and while being taken seriously. This is known as civil disobedience.
In this paper, I will be discussing how Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” affected the surrounding community in many ways. First, we will look at the situation King was in and the reason and motivation behind why he writes this letter. King does a great job at endorsing a sense of community in his letter written in Birmingham jail in response to “A Call for Unity” by the clergymen of Alabama. His discussion on nonviolence and the importance of having a Christ like attitude are clear examples of how Christians today should influence their communities. His letter still has a strong influence in the way people think about racial rights today, more than 50 years later.
Some people have claimed that Martin Luther King, Jr. is a 20th century Socrates. Indeed, King compares himself to Socrates at several points in his Letter from the Birmingham City Jail. In this paper I will argue that King is in fact a 20th century Socrates. By a 20th century Socrates, I mean someone who, like Socrates, is committed to practicing their philosophy, pursues just actions, and fights against moral complacency. I will show that King does meet this definition.
