While in Birmingham Jail, King says that it is proven through history that it is a rarity that people give up their privileges in their own consent. Groups tend to be more cold-hearted than individual people when it comes to giving up privileges. To give up privileges means to give up a special right or advantage. Proven through history, my personal experience, and other observations, the assertion that King makes is true. In 19th century America, in 1863 there was the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st. This proclamation stated that all people held as slaves, in the rebellious states, are and will be free. This was written after about 3 years of fighting in the civil war.
