Brigham Young once said “You educate a man; You educate an individual. Your educate a woman; You educate a generation.” Education is the first step to give women the power to choose the way of life she wants to lead and is essential to women empowerment. Whether its education through learning science in college or education through learning the skills of running their own business, education is essential to the emergence of a powerful leader. This is why I have been inspired to celebrate myself as a leader by working to give other girls, who may have been surrounded by the same negative opinions that I had, a voice and an opportunity to become leaders themselves through education. During my junior year I took it upon myself to form a new club in my school called Girl Up. There is a whole set of cultural forces and patriarchal rhetoric that aims to deter females from trusting their brains and voices, however Girl Up prompts girls to rise up and relieve underprivileged girls from the injustices that they face everyday, which is greatly centered around access to education for these girls. Since Girl Up helped a cause I am greatly passionate about I wanted to expose this issue to other girls in my school and help make a difference. I proposed the idea of creating a Girl Up club to my principal and she scheduled to meet with me. However, weeks passed by and I got no notice from her. I even called the superintendent and members of the board of education, but for some reason they disregarded my commitment to this club and denied me permission. It was extremely upsetting to know that all of my hard work and persistence was left unnoticed. Nonetheless, I didn’t give up; I persisted and came up with another way to form a club in my community. A knowledgeable woman has the skills, information, talent, and self-confidence that she requires to be a superior mother, employee, and resident. Men and women are like two sides of the coin and need identical opportunity to contribute to the country’s development. One cannot survive without the other. Women must be able to receive the same opportunities as men in education because it is with this education that leaders are sculpted and set out to be examples of the future. Leaders cause change in this world and by me being a leader within my community to help other girls have the opportunities of education and good health I am already making a difference.
