The protagonist of Paper Towns is Quentin Jacobsen, a high school senior with brown floppy hair living in Orlando, Florida. Quentin as a person is rather more preserved, quiet, and shy. In the beginning of the book, Quentin isn’t anything too exciting. He is any average teenage who likes video games. He longs for adventure, which is part of the reason why he first agrees to join Margo on her little trip (He had a slight crush on her too). The adventure Quentin goes on makes him more daring, a more confident person, and the trip lets Quentin experience a new type of rush. Margo tells Quentin she likes seeing him more confident, so Quentin tries to embrace that feature in him to impress Margo. She also hates how fake of a world they live in, a ‘paper town’ (nothing is really genuine) in a sense, and she begins to tell Quentin how consumerist and obsessed over the little things we as people are. Quentin becomes extremely determined to find her, sacrificing a lot. He missed both his own graduation and prom, and he lied to his parents on where he was going. He traveled long distances to go to different abandoned subdivisions in the region looking for a chance that Margo may be there. Quentin didn’t really care about what went on in his own life anymore, because he had such a great desire to find her and bring her back. Quentin goes searching for Margo because he thinks there’s a small chance that they could be together, since the trip gave him a little bit more of confidence on his crush. At the same time, Quentin is human, he’s lived next door to Margo for his entire life, so he is worried for her. He doesn’t want to see Margo in danger, because he knew Margo wasn’t the most ordinary person, but he knew there was much more behind
