Wouldn’t you think that a gang called The Greasers would be more detrimental to society than one called the Socs(short for Socials)? Well, that is not quite true. There is never a gang without a dark side, but some are a disgrace and menace in a different way. I am talking about the Socs; a coterie that is deeply rooted in society and the members are often thought of as great members of the community. The Greasers have their share of criminals and immoral people but the Socs take it to a different level. The Socs are more of a disgrace to society than the Greasers because if they do something wrong they can just buy their way out of it so they are free to ride around in their cars picking fights and they would not have even saved the children in the church! If a Greaser did something malicious he would face some kind of punishment unlike a Soc who would just pay the fine or bail without a care due to their immense wealth. When a Greaser breaks a law and gets caught they have to face the penalty. They end up serving jail time or doing community service. This may reform them into a better person or it might not but with Socs it is different. If they break a law so what? They can just pay bail. Did they vandalize something? At one particular instance in the book a group of young children wandered into an abandoned church. The church caught on fire and three Greasers(Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally) immediately rushed into the building to rescue the children at their own personal risk. They saved every child and none were injured. The Greasers however were not unscathed. Ponyboy was sick with pneumonia from smoke inhalation, Dally had an extreme burn on his arm, and Johnny died! The Soc Randy who happens to be the most respectable Soc said even he would not have tried to save the children from the burning
