Censorship in America can vary between the silencing of young voices and the prevention of exposing others of inappropriate material. Many people are afraid of losing their freedom of speech, as first amendment rights should be mandatory for American citizens. Polar to this argument insists the importance of censorship, as it can shield the public from information that can lead to fear or chaos. Leaving students ignorant to world problems, however, is argued by Sonja West that it removes their first amendment rights and creates a future working-class of Americans who are clouded from the truth. West is a law professor at the University of Georgia who is distinguished for her expertise in the first amendment law and minor in journalism.
In Derek Bok’s, Protecting Freedom of Expression On The Campus, he brings light to the issue of censorship in universities. He states that students at Harvard University got offended after a few students displayed the confederate flag. There have been many cases in which people have tried to censor offensive material however; the Supreme Court preferred to conserve the freedom of expression. He believes that if censorship starts to take place, it will be difficult to know when to cross the line. In addition, it will not fix the initial problem since the offenders will continue to abuse others using different means.
Censorships is harmful to people when it comes to communicating with each other which is demonstrated by Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451. People in the society do not communicate with each other like that use to. The society moves at such a fast pace “ a green blur, a pink blur, brown blurs are cows” (9) which is shown by how the people describe different objects. People in the society consider someone anti-social if they talk and ask questions which demonstrates it is not normal to socialize. In the society people are not suppose to ask why something is done they are supposed to just go along with everything.

The government can control many aspects of our lives. One piece that they are able to control is censorship, which there are many different types of. In the book, Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury illustrates how censorship causes people to be controlled by the government and does not let individuals have their own opinions; many of his predictions have proven to be true in recent years.
Censorship protects kids. In the article entitled “What Children Need is Censorship”, Aric Sigman remarks, “The difference between a child and an adult is that children are more vulnerable to the effects of everything from sunburn and alcohol to ideas and images.” Children are easily influenced most of the time. When they see adults doing things, they wanna do it, too. Sigman also says while free speech may be a laudable aim between adults, the concept is now being used primarily by commercial interests to speak freely to our children.

The First Amendment saves people's everyday speech rights. In fact, according to Ala.org in 1989,”This case presented the question of whether the First Amendment prevents a school board from removing a previously approved textbook from an elective high school class because of objections to the material's vulgarity and sexual explicitness.” A schools text book was to sexual and had vulgar refrences and the svhool thought the highschoolers did not need to read it. The school didn't the the book needed to be at the school and they are allowed to take away the textbook.
I can’t fully express anything that I want and its due to the security and general welfare of other fellow peers. A lot of class work has to be censored and cant be used for the sole purpose of education. We too, students, are persons under the American Constitution . So so this extent, i can say that our government has altered the first amendment.
Censorship Censorship in schools may not be the best choice for enriching the future minds of the United States of America. Children of the United States of America should have the right to learn about anything for it is there amended right. Taking knowledge away from them and censoring it should not be the answer to keeping our Children pure it should be what we teach our kids. We need to teach them right and wrong that is what will keep our child’s mind pure. Many books are being taken off shelves every day in student libraries because a couple people do not think that the book is suitable for children.

Books such as “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X" and many more have been greatly affected because of book banning. Not everyone has the same style, which causes outrage when certain books are banned. For example, if one book was banned and people prefered that book, it can make the community furious.
