John ran to Tom’s house in a hurry. He was so excited to see his long-time friend after his long trip around the world. As he walked into the house, he noticed Tom sitting in his office facing the window. Tom turned and looked at John. “Yes, I knew those footsteps were yours. When did you come back?” Tom asked.
“Yesterday,” John replied. “I thought I would make it a surprise for you,” he continued. They made some coffee and sat in the office talking for several hours about the trip John had.
Time passed quickly, and they did not realize how many hours they had spent talking. As they were talking, John noticed a book lying on a table. He paused then stood and walked to the book. With his hand, he wiped a layer of dust off a book titled The Bible.
Tom looked a little embarrassed. “We had a sandstorm a few days ago. It just left everything in the house covered with dust,” Tom remarked.

Thomas went on explaining while he was pointing to two dirty baskets on the floor of the front porch. “Do you see these baskets? I want each of you to get one of them and go every day for the next three days to the nearby river to fill the basket with water. On the fourth day, bring the baskets with you and come and meet me here.” John and Tom were confused by this task and what it had to do with their problem in reading the Bible. Each of them still took a basket.
The next morning when John and Tom met at work, they talked briefly about their meeting with Mr. Thomas and about how they uselessly tried to figure how this task would be related to helping them with their difficulties in reading the Bible. Tom reminded John of how he told him that Mr. Thomas would not have a solution for their problem. John asked Tom to be patient and encouraged him to do the task together. It was just because Tom likes the company of John that he agreed to meet him at the river that evening to fill the baskets with water as Mr. Thomas told
