Did you know that There are nearly 4 million cheerleaders in the U.S, but only 400,000 of those 4 million are high school cheerleaders? Cheerleading plays an important role in lots of girls lives. Cheerleading is a sport that has two different definitions. Cheerleading is considered to be a sport where it incorporates gymnastics and dance moves into a performance. The other type of cheerleading incorporates cheers and loud voices to encourage sports teams as they perform. Cheerleading goes all the way back to the year 1877. Cheerleading is a groups of males and females that perform routines that encompass gymnastics, dancing, yelling while doing motions, and stunting. Since cheerleading goes all the way back to 1877, there are many important events that have come from cheerleading. Cheerleading is a competitive sport that originated in the US, and it started in 1877 at Princeton University. Thomas Peebles created the sideline cheering. Cheerleading started out as an all male sport, and in 1907 women joined and it became a very dominate sport. In 1948, Lawrence Herkimer, a former cheerleader from Dallas, Texas organized the National Cheerleaders Association. This provided a way for cheerleaders to have competitions. These are competitive cheerleading and sideline cheerleading. Competition cheerleading means having dedication. Competitive cheer occurs during the winter season. The teams are expected to perform routines in front of judges where they are ranked on their tumbling and stunting abilities. Sideline cheerleading is all about enthusiasm. Sideline cheer was made to pump up the crowds at school or sporting events. Sideline cheer is during the fall, and the focus was meant to engage with fans and keep the fans spirit high during events.
