In “An Insect’s Wing: Sarajevo, 1940,” Brooks mentions some of what an Albanian women’s restrictive role is and shows some examples. These examples are part of the Albanian community, values and beliefs, they also relate to Stela as an Albanian wife. While staying at the Kamal’s house Lola helps watch Habib to help Stela out around the house while she stays there. An example that is shown in the chapter from the book that relates to the restrictive roles of Albanian women is when Lola sees the weeding photo and she thinks it was an arranged wedding, but Serif and Stela show otherwise when they care for and protect each other. Another example is when Serif hires Lola to do the laundry for stela, it is not because he does not want her to do her laundry but he wants stela to be careful and safe while she is pregnant with Habib. This shows that they risked themselves to be able to shelter a Jewish girl and a Jewish book, away from the Nazis. Serif and Stela also risked their lives. In my opinion all these examples shows how the Kamal’s expressed their kind values and intentions to be able to do this out of kindness. Brooks also uses the Albanian and Muslim community when talking about the traditional weddings and Serif and Stela prove that the beliefs and values that are said about a Muslim wedding are not always true. The Albanian language and beliefs are two things that saved a Jewish girl’s life and the actions that both the Kamal’s did for her risked their lives. The Albanian community is used in many ways to protect Lola life. It influenced the characters and the community because they risk their lives and safety in the interest of saving a Jewish girl, they did not know, from being part of the Jewish
