An Abundance of Katherine is a novel that written by John Green. This novel focus told about the main character named, Colin singleton. Colin is a prodigy child, his condition as a prodigy child makes him confronts on the journey from childhood to adulthood. His adolescent problems brought him to a journey during summer vocation into the city name Gutshot. With his experience a long a journey, Colin built his own perception about life and produce great impact on him. It is very closely related to his struggle against growing up. Colin’s enemy is he will be adult and left his status as a child prodigy. It is the first adolescent problem Colin singleton. John Green gives Colin character as child prodigy. He is difference with another children, he has a bright intelligence and can very quickly to learn something. In a simple way he is special child. But after he graduated from high school, Colin struggle with his identity. If we see the plot, the novel begin with “ the morning after noted child prodigy Colin Singleton graduated from high school and got dumped for the nineteenth time by a girl named Katherine, ….” From this sentence John Green want to inform that Colin a child Prodigy in the process grow up from childhood to adulthood. As a prodigy child, Colin gets many attention and love from many people because of his great ability. He has something that another children haven’t, it make him pride with himself. But now, he will grow up, he is not child anymore, and he will left his pride as a prodigy child. The unconscious reason for Colin obsession to be genius and famous is because of his anxiety will be left by the people who love him as a child prodigy. Besides that, Colin has a fear in the process he growing up. The fears of Colin is he fear he cant be accept of people in new world that he will be enter. The world is adulthood. Colin exemplifies typical teenage feelings of alienation. He rejects the idea of his father to study and not to waste his time. He clearly identifies with just focus to study and continue to grow his potential, he will feels alone and victimized. His parents push him to study and study. His life just belongs to study and grow his potential. He lost his world as a child who can play with his friend and he didn’t have a chance to live like other children. Even though he is prodigy child, but he lacking in his social life. After he graduated from senior high school, his final conclusion to his fellow student is they are just respect Colin as an intelligent student, not as a friend. When he in the process of grows up, he decided to have a vocation to find a meaning of live by freedom without push of anyone. This condition also relate with his first problem that obsess to be genius and famous. Doing a vocation be the way of Colin to learn and discover a new thing that can brought him to be a genius person. Because for Colin prodigies learn and geniuses do. With a journey he will have a chance to find his identity and can brought him away from live that make him alienate from
