Ambrose Bierce, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is a criticism of time, and defining what is reality and a dream. The story travels from the past to the present, and reality and dream, causing the reader to question reality and dreams. The story starts off with a man standing on a railroad, with his wrist tied behind his back. He is awaiting his hanging execution. The second part of the story we learn that mans name is Peyton Farquhar, a man unable to join the Confederate Army. We learn that he is convicted of sabotage, and questions why a civilian would attempt sabotage. In the third part, we go back to the present of the hanging. The story begins with Hawkins and Belcher being held captive in Ireland, in the cottage of an elderly lady. In the first part of the story we learn the men like to play cards, and argue about everyday topics like religion and politics. Bonaparte, begins to befriend one the prisoners, Hawkins and Belcher. Bonaparte calls the English prisons “chum”, and starts to humanize the prisoners. When Bonaparte and the other Irish soldiers find out the prisoners are “hostages”. They were told, “The enemy… have prisoners belong to us, and now they talk of shooting them. If they shoot our prisoners we'll shoot theirs, and serve them right.” Bonaparte becomes guilty, and is upset by the news. Days later, Feeney, arrives and tells them the hostages are to be executed. Hawkins and Belcher learn of their executions, and try to talk themselves out of it, and even asks to fight along side them. Bonaparte has a hard time dealing with shooting someone he has become friends with, and soon realizes he made a mistake befriending Hawkins and Belcher.
