Books play an important role in society but no one knows how important they are until they are gone. The book “Fahrenheit 451” was written by Ray Bradbury in 1953. This book is about a futuristic society without books. The main character of the book is firefighter Guy Montag. Unlike current-day firefighters, the futuristic firefighter's jobs are to create fires, not to put them out. The things that these futuristic firefighters set on fire are books because they create an unequal society. They create an unequal society because they make some people smarter than others. At first Guy Montag agrees with the idea that books are bad but later realizes the importance of them and the impact they have on society. Ray Bradbury also supports this theme when the handymen (EMTs for the novels Society) “stood with the cigarette smoke curling around their noses and into their eyes without making them blink or squint.” (13) right after saving Mildred's life and then went on to say “That’s fifty bucks.” (13) so casually like nothing had happened even though she just was about to die. The fact that untrained handymen were working on someone that was about to die instead of doctors shows that no books can cause people to become less intelligent and lack critical thinking. Since books expose people to different situations and help them learn to see different perspectives. Understanding different points of view is a critical element in creating a more diverse and knowledgeable society, which then enhances people’s critical thinking.
