The Untrue Truth When one can no longer hold his/her own beliefs because of fear of the consequences for having those beliefs, then the cultivated fear is a sign that the individual is losing his/her independence in a society. In 1984, written by George Orwell, the leader of a society known as “the Party” is someone referred to as “Big Brother,” and he is in control of every aspect of one’s life. The current president of the United States, Donald Trump, has the desire for that same power as Big Brother to control the population through propaganda and manipulation. President Trump causes Americans to have a sense of doubt every time he reports “news” because of how often his information is either misleading or entirely false. However, this American idea of freedom comes at a price depending on if one is an immigrant, and where he/she is immigrating from. An article written by David Jackson from USA Today regarding Trump’s immigration views stated that “President Trump denies he is about to authorize a ‘ban’ on Muslim migration, only restrictions on entry from countries with a history of terrorism.” Trump stated in his first television interview with ABC News that he will authorize the ban for “countries that have tremendous terror…and countries that people are going to come in and cause us tremendous problems” (Jackson). As such, the restrictions Trump is enforcing are affecting those who come from a certain ethnic background, and not based on each individual’s background.
