Flannery O’Connor uses foreshadowing throughout her story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” If the reader picks up on the foreshadowing in the beginning of the story, he or she can tell that the ending is not going to bode well for Bailey and his family. Discussions of The Misfit, descriptions of the family, and other parts of the story provide evidence of foreshadowing where the reader will be able to make an assumption of the fate for Bailey’s family. Flannery O’Connor uses too much foreshadowing in this story; if the reader is really paying attention to the foreshadowing in this story then he or she can figure out how the story will end. O’Connor does not waste anytime throwing foreshadowing topics into this story.
With her death, the real focus of this story can be seen. Who is the “Good Man” who is supposedly hard to find? The answer to this question can be found by retracing the path of the grandmother on her ascension to heaven. Examination of the effects of her self-centered, devious, and vacuous life reveals that the good man is not the grandmother, or anyone like her. By the end of the story, the grandmother realizes that the only “Good Man” is Christ, himself.

In the novel In Cold Blood, Capote presents Perry as a villain shaped by the unfortunate experiences of his childhood. The first instance of these experiences can be seen in Tex’s letter to the Kansas State Parole Board. Tex describes Perry’s early childhood as rather light-hearted, up until the point when his mother “wanted to go to the City and live a wild life” (Capote 126).

The balance of what is good and what is bad is a rather controversial topic in the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find". Most notably, the characteristics of both the Grandmother and the Misfit. The Misfit portrays an immoral personality and seems to be the evil in the story while the grandmother is the innocent lady seeking to be the good in this story. However, the religious virtues effect both personas and in itself draws the line around them mutually as sinners. Both characters have a particular relationship with Jesus, a physical crisis crossed with a spiritual crisis and different conceptions of reality; thus, revealing how the portrayal of these characters are not what may seem.

The story focuses on a good vs evil theme, the Grandmother vs the Misfit. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” starts out with a family preparing to go on vacation in Florida. Their trip takes them down a dirt road, and into the waiting arms of the Misfit. This scene is where we see the direct contention between the Grandmother and the Misfit.
In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the grandmother’s selfish attitude and pride forces the family to change their traveling plans. The grandmother was persistent on going to Tennessee, but the rest of her family wanted to go elsewhere. After bothering her family enough she got her way. On this trip she convinces the family to take a small detour where they would meet their tragic fate of death. O’Connor shows how the grandmother’s selfish pride led to each one of the family members death.
2. For this week’s reading, I chose “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor. For the short story, the author describes in details what the characters do and provide great detail on the places. I think that all the details so carefully provided for us are used to make us, readers, dive into the story and feel like we take the trip with the characters. Reading the final scene, I felt like I was there walking among the characters and seeing their faces.

Most importantly, O’Connor’s story grabs the reader’s attention with thought-provoking themes. It mainly talks about the complexities of human nature and the struggle between good and evil characters.
