Appearance and the idea of ‘judging a book by its cover’ is very plain in today’s society. If a person wears all black, then they are emo. If a girl is a cheerleader she is very ‘stuck-up’ and mean to others. It is very hard to not judge a person by their looks, when given at first glance, that is all we see. This idea becomes apparent in the short story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, by Flannery O'Connor. A grandmother and her son's family take a trip down to Florida. While on the road, the family attempt to visit an old house, and get into a car accident. They are then found by a ‘serial killer’ known as the Misfit, and they are all, after some time, killed. His own sense of right and wrong is askew, yet he still uses it to forward his actions. This begins to tie into how he appears physically, shown in the text. “His hair was beginning to gray and he wore silver-rimmed spectacles…”(O’Connor 10). The glasses and description of his hair give the idea that he is described as older, possibly mentally more than physically. He cannot be older than the grandmother, so his hair being grey symbolizes the mental strain that he had to endure while not only committing the crimes, but while being held in a mental institute. “Without his glasses, The Misfit’s eyes were red-rimmed and pale and defenseless-looking”(O’Connor 16). Both examples lead to the idea of him having seen a lot, through crimes and being locked up. He uses his hard outside and a truculent attitude to hide how vulnerable he may be
