The value of reading the first-hand life of someone’s story is you get the know personally the experiences the author had. We get to hear how they felt, what they did, and what they went through instead of seeing it from someone else’s side of the story. We get to see the different perspectives from other people that may be different from something we experienced. Some autobiographies gives us lessons that we can use and they use their personal encounters to help the reader become aware of what the author is trying to say. What I learned from reading this story is that no matter how bad the situation you are going through maybe, you can always find a way to get through it. James tells us his compelling story of his story with addiction and his experiences in rehab. This story was inspirational because we see from someone else’s perspective how going through some things can give you the power to change in the end. This memoir definitely shows you that people go through way harder things than you might yourself. A quote from the book says, “ Be smart, be strong, be proud, live honorably and with dignity, and just hold on” (p. 195). My narrative was about telling my parents that I wanted a relationship and how the obstacles within that were hard but in the end it all worked out. If someone else was going through the same thing I was I wanted to be able to share my experience so they could have an insight on what to do. In my memoir I said, “ I was so completely infatuated with this kid that I couldn’t possibly stay away from him. But here’s the problem. Going up in a somewhat strict family my parents had always raised me to never date until I at least got into college.” This line is an ideal description of what my situation was like and it shows the readers how it felt to be in that situation. By the end of my narrative readers see how my life changed after telling my parents. “Also passion… Passion is a strong thing. If you really feel strongly about something don’t be afraid to go ahead and say/do whatever it is. It may start off as a bad thing but I promise life always finds a way of working itself out.” I chose this topic because I feel like a lot of people with strict parents can relate and it would help them to express their feelings instead of keeping it trapped like I had. Life has obstacles but if you feel like it’s something that needs to be told you should never push it
