The Problem with Age: The Constitution was created nearly two hundred years ago and of course like everything with age, needs repair. Larry J. Sabato, a Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, outlines a number of fixes to the Constitution in his book, A More Perfect Constitution: Why the Constitution Must Be Revised: Ideas to Inspire a New Generation. The aging Constitution has caused a substantial need to review the way a President’s term is held and a creation of a balanced budget.

If the President did not have to run for reelection, then the President would save an average of 514 days to deal with issues affecting the nation. Within 500 days, there may be issuing of policies, statutes, and regulations and passed for the benefit of the country. Sabato’s plan of removing the reelection process would and could increase the prosperity of the country and an increasing number of lost voices in the government, instead of an institution running things. The problem with this system is that in a few years when the countries who bought our debt returns to get their money, plus interest, our debt will once again rise. Sabato has stated that Congress should pass the Balanced Budget Amendment. His plan is to lower the supermajority needed to vote on revenue bills to a 51% vote, with end-of-fiscal-year escape clauses, that will encourage financial fairness. The lowered majority will allow an easier sweep through Congress, which means more likely to pass. The end-of-the-fiscal-year clause will allow for a reformation of the budget at the end of each fiscal year to balance more with inflation and other costs that occur throughout a country. According to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation (2012),”Supporters of a balanced budget amendment argue that respect for the Constitution will create strong political pressure to rein in deficits and impose needed accountability for irresponsible fiscal policy.” With a BBA we can lower the national debt, but the process of lowering the debt will take time.
