A poem was once written by a black poet named Langston Hughes, The name of this poem is called Dream Deferred. This single poem would cause a black woman named Lorraine Hansberry to write a play called A raisin in the sun. These two would meet for the first time in New York where they would become good friends. The poem asks the question, what happens to a dream deferred, and in turn the play answers that question. And the answer to this question is that when a dream is deferred, it will hurt you and your loved ones very badly. Starting off with the largest example of a dream deferred, Walter jr. when he had seized the means to obtain him and his family's dreams, he placed it into the hands of another man, an untrustworthy man. Through his ignorance, through his idiotic actions, through his blind faith he ruined everything in one foul swoop. Stating it himself “ I trusted you man, i put my life in your hands… That money is made out of my father's flesh.” (Hansberry 29) Leading his family for the first time, he ends up risking his family's future only for to backfire, “Or does it explode?” (Hughes 11) …show more content…

Beneatha's dreams had always revolved around helping people in need. But most of all she wanted to be a doctor and she gained the opportunity to achieve her dream when Walter sr’s life insurance came, but she would not receive it due to Walter jr losing all of the life insurance. Now, with almost no means of getting she is left in shock “ He gave away the money Asagai… The insurance money. My brother gave it away.” (Hansberry 132) This is a prime example of how Walter jr’s actions had hurt not only him, but his family as well. “ or fester like a sore And then run? “ (Hughes
