In the news article, Girl Moved To Tears by Mice of Men Cliff Notes, written by the onion uses multiple forms of satire to produce its tone towards the topic. The tone in this article is sarcastic, judgmental, and a little bit humorous towards the idea of Cliff Notes. The author believes Cliff Notes are pointless and people who read them instead of the actual book are lazy. In this article the author uses parody and sarcasm in order to convey the point of view and tone of the news article. The main satire used in the new article written by the Onion is parody.
“Ode to Joy (and Sadness, and Anger)” 1. Write a one-paragraph summary of Scotts review, being sure to identify his criteria for evaluation and the extent to which he claims the movie did or did not satisfy them. In his review, “Ode to Joy (and Sadness, and Anger)”, Scott describes the film Inside Out. He claims that what makes the film so popular and groundbreaking is the connection it has to the audience.
1. Pathos is a term which appeals to emotion. It convinces an audience by creating feelings that already reside in them. Pathos is presented in the opening of “ A New Perspective” written by Janice E. Fein when the narrator talks about going to kindergarten. She mentions how her mother “is walking me to kindergarten” which appeals to the audience since it brings up memories of how their mother or father must have walked them to kindergarten too.
Being a widow would be very hard for some people. They don’t know how to deal with themselves or how to hold in feelings or even how to act. The worst news someone could receive would be two men coming to the house where someone is and telling that someone that their husband passed. For Taryn Davis, she didn’t take the news well until she started her own program called “American Widow Project”. The AWP helps widows overcome their thoughts and feelings.
In Susan Wolf’s article “The Meaning of Lives” she argues a meaningful life is engaged in positive projects to some degree of success. She also believes that the pursuits with meaning have an objective value that connects with the rest humanity. Susan Wolf’s did not write about her thoughts on the concept of plugging oneself into an experience machine like described by Christopher Grau in “Bad Dreams, Evil Demons, and the Experience Machine”, but her argument for what gives meaning to a life makes it clear that she would argue someone should choose to not plug in. The reason a person would choose to plug into an experience machine is because they could live out all of their fantasies and avoid all the discomfort experienced in real life. But
She begins by explaining how since she is pregnant she is vulnerable,” my weary body full of pain. ”(50) and how her husband was taken away and she can never rest and asks,” how can I survive?”(50)She is telling her father-in-law how much physical and mental strain the whole predicament put on her. Since she is pregnant she is already in more pain and is more vulnerable and now that she has the burden of taking care of what her husband did. She is pregnant and doesn't know if her husband and the father of the coming child will be present and see the birth of his child, and she wants her father-in-law to know how much pain she is in.

In My Antonia, Willa Cather pens a nostalgic story focused on a two people with a unique connection. Jim Burden narrates the story of Antonia Shimerda, the girl next door who happens to be a Bohemian emigrant. Jim moves to his grandparents’ house after his parents die; Antonia arrives in the United States with her family and little else. The two are vastly different, but bond quickly on the Nebraska prairie. Most people who study the novel acknowledge the obvious impact that Antonia has on Jim and see Antonia as “in one way or another, the center of the novel” (Lucenti).
In The Catcher in the Rye, it is observed that the novel is about grief. There are 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and finally acceptance. The Catcher in the Rye shows how Holden goes through the grieving process. By the end of the novel it shows how Holden has reached closure or a way to let go.
From the Suffragette movement of the early 20th century to modern day Women’s Marches, it is evident that women have continuously fought against the expectations and limitations placed on them by society. Throughout William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying, female characters also grapple with gender standards, and either abide by or reject them. Characters such as Dewey Dell and Cora Tull follow female expectations since Dewey Dell allows men to control her and Cora fulfills the expected role of being a caretaker for her husband and children. Addie Bundren meanwhile does not obey societal expectations, which is apparent since she has her own desires and rejects the homemaker role given to women during this time.
Stacy Davis, self-proclaimed activist for feminism and womanism, is a “scholar trained in feminist theory and African American biblical hermeneutics” (Davis 23). In her article, The Invisible Woman: Numbers 30 and the Policies of Singleness in Africana Communities, Davis argues for a prominent place for single woman (specifically those who have never married) in biblical scholarship, and as leaders in the church, with questions of their sexuality left alone. Davis argues this viewpoint from the perspective as an unmarried black woman. Davis establishes the foundation for her argument in Numbers 30, a text that altogether omits reference to single woman, rather each group of women mentioned in the text about vows refers to them in relation to men (21). Thus, Davis establishes the omission of single women in the Hebrew Bible as the invisible women.
“Talking to the Dead” is a short story by Silvia Watanabe. According to her biography, she wants to save the stories that represent their community. In “Talking to the Dead,” we can find four main characters: Aunty, Clinton, Yuri and Yuri’s mother. Aunty and Clinton have a relationship mother and son quite peculiar. Although Aunty prepares her son since he was a child to continue in the family trade when Clinton becomes an adult, he markets his mother’s occupation and “brings the scientific spirit of free enterprise to the doorstep of the hereafter” as the author narrates it.
When thinking of personal experiences, “The Mother” by Gwendolyn Brooks touches on the emotional topic of abortion. Even though this poem was published decades ago, it can still be seen very relevant to this day. Accepting abortion and the outcome can indeed be a challenging task for many, while others seem to adapt to it without much of a problem. Gwendolyn Brooks’ writing lets us take a look at the mothers view point of abortion and how a mother responds to her new situation. Throughout the poem, the speaker shows signs of grieving concern of the topic of abortion and its outcomes by presenting emotions of regret and memories, shame and guilt, and contradicting herself to almost justify what she has done.
In “Only Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros, she describes a series of events throughout her life that all relate to her relationship with her father. Cisneros begins her story by talking about how she was seen as “only a daughter”. She then transitions to talking about her education and her father’s opinion on what it is for and worth. Cisneros then ends it with a conclusion between her and her father which involved one of her stories. Throughout the story, Cisneros talks about what she believed her father thought about her and her career choices, and they turn out to be a bit different than what she thought.
Anne Bradstreet’s three elegies for her grandchildren are very sanding and have many similarities, as well as differences. The three poems by Bradstreet are titled, “In Memory of My Dear Grandchild, Elizabeth Bradstreet, Who Deceased August, 1665, Being a Year and a Half Old," " In Memory of My Dear Grandchild Anne Bradstreet, Who Deceased June 20, 1669, Being Three Years and Seven Months Old," and "On My Dear Grandchild Simon Bradstreet, Who Died on 16 November, 1669, Being But a Month, and One Day Old.” In the very first poem, it would seem her first grandchild had pasted away at a year and a half old.
