In the novel Across a Hundred Mountains, Reyena Grande tells the story of a young girl who takes the risk to travels to the United States to find her father, Miguel. However, Mexican immigrants strive to come to the Unites states, but have challenges to face crossing the border. Throughout her journey, Juana make a sacrifice and starts a lives a new life; as Juana stays in Tijuana at a park late at night, Juana was mistakenly taken to jail. Police officers assume that Juana was the one that stole a man’s wallet. When Juana was put in jail, she meets a friend name Adalina Vasquez. Juana was not able to cross the border because she does not have any papers. Adelina on the other hand is an American citizen. Taking Adelina’s identity helped Juana pass the border patrol and live in the United States. As Juana crosses the border as Adelina, her new journey begins. She had a chance to meet Don Erenesto who helped her find a place to stay. Don Erenesto was like a father to Adelina. He motivated her go to school and get a job. Adelina listen to Don Enersto, got a job and went to school. Adelina never had the opportunity to go to school in Guerero because her family did not have the money for books. Don Erenesto did not wanted Adelina to spend so much time looking for her father. He wanted Adelina to make something out of herself, using the advantage that she is living in the United States, a place where she can expand her knowledge. Because Adelina listened to Don Erensto, she continues to go to school and attended to Cal State LA. Her stay in Los Angeles made Adelina grew and spread her wings. She was living the American dream. Changing Juana’s identity helped her become a different person. This helped Juana move on with her past life and start a new beginning. She has become independent, strong, and loyal. She however still has her younger brother. Juana being Adelina gaved her so much power to her new life. She went to school, became successful, and have people surrounding her with love. She gains more things in life that she never had. Adelina went from living in a cold unsteady shack, to a place of her own. All the struggles she gone thru, crossing the border, being a prostitute, having so little on food, shows how ambitious she was to take the risk do what she has to do. In the end of the day, she would not have her family reunited anymore. But they will always be in Adelina’s memory. In memory of her parents, she was given by her younger brother a plate that was a gift to Adelina’s parents. It is a symbol of family. A family that can break like a plate, but can always be put back together
