The following cartoon was created by Thomas Nast in 1888, entitled, 'Always Killing the Goose that Lays the Golden Egg'. It depicts a common displeasure for the development of the unions as a reaction to the Railroad Strike of 1877. The inspiration behind the cartoon came from an old folk tale about a greedy couple who own a goose. The goose lays one golden egg, every day. They become so greedy that they decide to kill the animal so they can collect more eggs from inside the goose. However, after doing so, they see that there aren’t any eggs inside, and realise their source is forever gone.
